Massages are the most popular spa treatments in the U.S. followed by facials. A perfect antidote to our stress-filled lives, a massage is more than an indulgence – it’s a way to promote peace of mind and physical well-being.

Spas today offer a menu of massages from the most popular —Swedish massage —to the specialized sports massage.

Swedish Massage

This is the most common massage performed in a spa and often the first choice for people who have never had a massage before. Long strokes, circular motions and kneading help to relax and relieve muscle tension and stiffness in joints. Because the movements follow the same direction as the blood flow to the heart, this massage helps improve circulation.

Deep Tissue Massage

Although similar to a Swedish massage, the movements in a deep tissue massage are slower and more intense. The massage therapist applies deeper pressure to specific areas of tension in order to increase circulation and relieve the pain.

Aromatherapy Massage

The highly concentrated essential oils used in the message have a relaxing or stimulating effect on your senses. The use of lavender or chamomile has a calming effect on the body while sage and rose add energy.

Shiatsu

Shiastu is a traditional Japanese massage whose name is a combination of the words for finger and pressure. Using thumbs, fingers and palms, the therapist applies pressure for several seconds to specific areas of the body. Shiatsu helps to improve circulation, relax muscles and increase energy.

A perfect antidote to our stress-filled lives, a massage is more than an indulgence – it’s a way to promote peace of mind and physical well-being.

Thai Massage

More intense than Shiatsu, the Thai massage has been compared to yoga—except that you do not have to do the work. The therapist moves you into a series of yoga-like postures and applies pressure to specific points on the body. You will be on a padded mat, instead of a massage table. Good for improving energy levels, flexibility and circulation, this massage uses no oils.

Hot Stone

In this massage, heated stones are applied to the localized areas of the body. Combined with a gentle massage, the warmth of these smooth stones help to alleviate muscle tension and leave you relaxed and reenergized.

Sports Massage

While designed for athletes, a sports massage is beneficial for anyone who goes to the gym frequently or is physically active. Incorporating stretching with light and deep kneading, this massage helps to improve flexibility and prevent injury.

Pregnancy

Customized to a woman’s individual needs, these should only be performed by massage therapists who are certified in pregnancy massages. The mother’s body must be properly supported with pillows and padding during this massage. The benefits to the expectant mother include reducing stress and relieving back pain.
