Large renovation projects often require a person to take charge of the whole job. This general contractor will obtain all the necessary permits, hire the contractors (plumbers, electricians, etc.) and supervise the work being done.  You want to make sure you choose someone who is experienced with your type of project. Knowing the materials, techniques, common problems and best solutions are key. Here are some questions to ask during the interview process.

1. How long have you been in business?

2. Are you and your subcontractors licensed?

3. What kind of work do you specialize in?

4. Have you worked on similar jobs in the past year?

5. Will you using subcontractors for the work? 

6. Will you be obtaining all the required permits? 

7. What is your typical work schedule?

8. Do you offer a warranty? If so, what does it cover?

9. Do you carry workers’ compensation, liability insurance and property damage insurance?

10.  Will you provide a written contract?

Checking References

Here are some questions to ask the contractor’s customers.

1. Was your project completed on time and on budget?

2. Were you informed about the job’s status as well as any problems experienced?

3. Did you have any unforeseen costs?

4. Did the workers clean up after the job was complete?

5. Were you satisfied with the work? If so, would you use the contractor again?
