Getting an estimate for a service sounds easy, right? Just ask a vendor for the cost and you can count on that figure when you place the order. But, moving estimates work differently than other types of estimates and you should be aware of this before you make arrangements with a mover. There are two types of estimates that moving companies will issue: a non-binding estimate and a binding one.
A non-binding estimate means the the figure quoted could go higher based on actual weight or other services performed on the day of the move. In this case, the mover cannot charge you more than an additional 10 percent of the estimate cost. Don't ever pay a fee for a non-binding estimate. Some experts believe the best type of estimate is a binding one. In this case, a mover is held to that figure regardless of the weight of the load.
However, even with a binding estimate, you should make sure you fully understand all the services that are included in that figure. Will the estimate cover packing and packing materials? What about preparing appliances for the move, taking items off walls or taking apart certain types of furniture?
You should always get moving estimates in writing and get at least three or four companies to give you one. Never get a moving estimate over the phone. To provide an accurate estimate, a mover has to walk through your house and get familiar with the items you need to move.
