Before you embark on your first big renovation project, make sure you get plenty of home improvement information. With so many related shows on TV, it might get tempting to just jump right in. But, you could find yourself in trouble: you accidentally break a piece of plumbing and need to have the floor torn up to get it fixed. Here are some general home improvement tips to consider before you pick up a saw or hammer:

  • Learn first about home improvement tools like circular saws, sanders, power planers, angle grinders and routers.
  • Make a list of all the tools you need for a particular project before you shop. Buy a secure case for any power tools you purchase.
  • Learn how to measure properly. If you allow some waste wood on the end of pieces you cut, you'll save yourself time and money. The golden rule of home improvement measuring is "measure twice and cut once."
  • Learn all you can about safety and invest in safety gear such as knee pads, goggles and a helmet.
