With so many things to do before and during a move, it's easy to overlook the small details that make your move much less stressful. For example, it's best to make a file just for important documents. In this file, you should keep all paperwork related to the moving company. It's recommended that you pack family documents, such as birth certificates, marriage licenses, wills, passports and school records, in a firesafe box that you keep with you. Before you do so, make copies and keep those with you in your document file. You may need them before you're able to find them in your new home.
What else can you to simplify the moving process?
- A few days before your move date, make phone calls to everyone who is scheduled to help you. This includes your moving company, truck rental company and even baby sitters. Double check on the times you agreed upon.
- Make sure you have a plan for your pets on moving day so they do not get upset by the commotion and run away.
- Have someone responsible for taking a last look in your home before you take off, including all the closets.
- Put a 'load last' sign on these items: vacuum cleaner, broom, ladder and any items you want to open first when you reach your destination such as suitcases and some toys.
- Finally, allow extra time on moving day as it's likely a few things will go wrong.
