These quick tips can reward you with big savings on your next electric bill.

  • Turn off lights you’re not using. This simple solution can provide a windfall of savings.
  • Adjust your thermostat. Raise the temperature to 78 degrees in the summer and lower it to 68 degrees in the winter. Consider installing a programmable thermostat so you can further adjust it when you’re out of the house or sleeping. For every degree, you’ll save 3% in energy costs.
  • Check on your refrigerator to make sure it’s operating efficiently. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to adjust the “cold” control. Vacuum the coils regularly to remove dust.
  • Lower your water heater to 120 degrees. Most likely you won’t notice the difference.
  • Go with full loads in your electric dryer, a major energy user.
  • Swap standard incandescent bulbs with high efficient compact fluorescent bulbs, which use ¼ to a 1/3 less energy. They also last 10 and 13 times longer which more than makes up for their higher price.
  •  When you shop for appliances, make sure they are energy efficient.
  • Use smart strip surge protectors which automatically turn off power to plugs that aren’t in use.
  • If you have an extra fridge, keep it in the basement. The cooler temperature means it won’t have to work as hard.
